3 Essential Shoes For Backpackers

When it comes to traversing the globe, I need my feet to be comfortable.  Otherwise, I get blisters or they get sore and I’m cranky, which is no fun for anyone.  Often, we take our feet for granted.  Our feet are important parts of our bodies that need to be taken care of so that we may enjoy so much of what life has to offer.  In this post, I’ll go over my three essential pairs of shoes that I always bring in my bag no matter where I am going.

Converse

As an all around shoe/sneaker, Converse fit nearly every occasion when you’re a backpacker.  Barring formal events, I feel comfortable wearing converse in nearly any situation while on the road.  There’s a color for every taste and Converse are one of the few shoes that are meant to get a little dirty!  (Personally, I have white low tops and red high tops.)

Birkenstocks

In warm weather places, having a pair of comfortable sandals that easily go from the beach to walking long distances is essential.  Ever since I bought my birkies, I’ve never looked back.  They are by far the most comfortable sandals I’ve ever worn because they fit my feet like a glove whilst offering great support necessary for long distances.  My first and only pair of birkies helped me explored Vietnam, New Zealand, and now I have them with me in Australia! (I have the Black Arizona, but I’m lusting after the white and metallic designs!)

Hiking Boots

If you love the outdoors, you can’t go backpacking without a reliable pair of hiking boots.  Always choose something waterproof made with gortex.  As a personal preference, I get high ankle boots because I need the ankle support, but I know plenty of travelers who wear low rise hiking shoes.  They are great all-purpose shoes that are usable for difficult treks, short walks outside, and water proof shoes when the weather goes sour!  (I bought my Salomon hiking boots almost 3 years ago before I went to study in western Ireland and they’ve served me well)

I thought Birkenstocks were overrated until I bought a knockoff pair at a market in Vietnam. Best shoes I’ve ever worn until I bought real Birkenstocks haha

I think almost everyone’s closet hides a pair of Converse 😀 I could not agree more, if it looks brand new and clean, it’s not the real feel

Yes! Especially with a white pair. I love that it’s meant to look dirty.

I’m so sick of blisters, wet feet and sore toes. I need to listen to your post and take the right footwear. I always think less is more on the road but getting footwear wrong is not worth it.

I’ve never been a fan of converse. But I absolutely agree with carrying reliable hiking boots! They make all the difference. I have had a similar experience with my Quechua ones, three years going strong.

Nice collection! I personally love converse. They are so comfortable and light. I haven’t tried sandals yet but reading your description I think I must go for them.
