Rotorua Redwoods
Call me ignorant, but I thought that the only place in the world I could find redwood trees is California, USA. You may be able to imagine my confusion when I drove through the woods on my way back from sleeping next to Lake I-Don’t-Know-What and saw a sign that read: REDWOODS TURN LEFT. What?
Obviously, I had to turn left because there’s just no chance that there could be redwood trees in Rotorua, New Zealand. Wrong again, young Tara.
Bright and early at 8 am, I found myself wandering through the quiet Whakarewarewa Forest. Bike tracks, walking tracks, and horse tracks weave in and around the forest, taking explorers through the beautiful green and red trees. Walking trail lengths range from 30 minutes to 3.5 hours. If I had known about this place prior, I would have planned a long multi-hour tramp through the woods.
The Redwoods Treewalk is a premium option that allows visitors to walk 553 meters on suspended bridges through the forest. This seemed like a great way to appreciate the beauty and height of the Californian coastal Redwoods.
Walking through the redwood forest was a very pleasant surprise on a day when I didn’t think I would be spending very much time in nature. It was a refreshing way to begin my morning, especially since I was exhausted from travel and lacking motivation at this point during my trip. I may or may not have closed my eyes and wrapped my arms around a few of my tall, beautiful friends. Call me a treehugger.
