Australia Week 1 Update

So we landed down in Australia seven days ago after nearly three days of constant travel.  We flew over thousands of miles of North America and Pacific Ocean, boarded four planes, set foot in three countries, and stayed awake for far too many hours.

A special shout out to Essence of Fiji Rejuvenation Center on our Nadi layover.  We arrived sleep-deprived and left with smiles and happy bellies.  More airport towns need to follow your lead!

A few months ago whilst planning this endeavor we decided to choose Adelaide as our first stop and potential home base.  The city seemed small, laidback, but still pulsing.  Based on what I had heard, Adelaide is not where the backpackers flock, which is exactly the place I want to be!  Plus it’s near the ocean and Waiheke Island turned me into a mermaid.  And not to mention… we are currently in the midst of Australia’s best wine-producing regions!

We opted to spend our first week in Glenelg, a small beach town just a few kilometers away, so that’s where we have been since our arrival.  Our mornings involve waking up with the sun to run along the beach.  During the day we search for tasty coffee (and despite finding terrible coffee we continue our search), explore Adelaide, apply for jobs, and eat all the dumplings in Chinatown that my heart desires.

Exciting bits n bobs from our first week…

-We drank Fiji water in Fiji

-I can officially add 2 new countries to my list of countries visited (though I am under no illusion that a layover in Fiji showed me even an inch of what that beautiful country has to offer and I will be back!)

-I attended & watched my first (and second) cricket match

-After consuming one beer, I felt so far under the influence that I nearly couldn’t function (thanks jet lag!)

-We saw a pair of dolphins and a shark in the water

I hope to have more interesting tidbits to provide next week, but for now, we are working on securing a new home!  Adelaide recommendations are welcome.

It’s like, I know theoretically that there’s more to Australia than just Melbourne and Sydney and the Gold Coast and Perth, but I really know nothing about other places in Australia! Looking forward to reading more about your adventures in Adelaide.

Adelaide certainly isn’t as popular as other Australian cities like Sydney, Melbourne and even Perth. However, I’ve heard great things about it as well. Sun and sand – looks like it will be a perfect beach vacation for you! 🙂
