A Quiet Getaway to Comino Island, Malta

When my friend Courtney and I decided to travel to Malta, we did so solely based on Google Images.  After three months in grey London, we longed for a quiet beach getaway to somewhere we had never heard of.  I took one look at a series of photos entitled “Blue Lagoon,” turned my laptop toward Courtney, and we were sold.

We opted to stay on the northern coast of Mellieha because it was a right next to the ferry on which we would ride to visit the magazine worthy Blue Lagoon and because it did not feel touristy at all, especially compared to Valetta.  The Maltese people were kind and extremely curious how two American girls ended up on their island.

Essentially uninhabited today, Comino is a small Maltese island residing between Gozo and Malta.  No cars, one hotel, and endless blue waters.  We visited in early April before the summer crowds rushed the island and it was the perfect time.

Before traveling to this gorgeous country, I knew nothing about its historical significance, the many ancient and modern European powers that had taken hold of its strategic naval position in the Mediterranean, or of the beautiful ruins of Gozo.  Honestly, I’m still learning.  I chose Malta primarily because I needed some vitamin D and relaxation and, since then, I have been dying to return and truly experience all that the archipelago has to offer.

Lovely pictures! I’ve never been to Malta, but I have a good friend living there, who’s always inviting me over. I should really do it soon, looks like I’m missing out 🙂

Oh my goodness, please do. I don’t know anyone else who has ever been there so I would love to have someone to talk about it with!
