5 Things You Should Taste During Your First Visit To Vermont

If you are heading to the state of Vermont for the first time, you HAVE to taste these five items.  This short list has been created for those traveling to Vermont for the first time.  Locals and frequent Vermont-goers will have walked these roads years ago and fail to be impressed (except for maple creemees… those never get old).

Maple Creemees

Soft-served maple ice cream… need I say more?  Studies show that you can eat four or five without feeling full, but your happiness levels will be through the roof.

Maple Syrup

Vermont is the place where the rest of New England (and I presume the country) looks to for truly rich, authentic maple syrup.  If you can finagle a maple syrup tasting, do not pass it up.

Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream

Sure, you’ve probably tasted Ben and Jerry’s ice cream before.  And sure, five varying flavors are probably within arm’s reach at your local grocery store.  But have you ever toured the original factory?  And tasted the deliciousness produced right there on the premises?  I didn’t think so.  Touring the factory only costs $4 and you get a hefty tasting included in that price.

Heady Topper

I can only speak for some of the large number of people I know in Connecticut’s beer-loving community when I praise Alchemist Brewery.  Alchemist beers are only sold within 25 miles of the brewery.  So basically, Stowe, Burlington, or bust.  Whenever anyone from CT hears that I am heading up to Vermont, someone always begs for a pack of Heady Topper to be brought back home.  The new brewery opened last year and its awesomeness has continued to grow just like the IBU in its IPAs.

Homemade Whoopee Pies

Thaaaat’s right you read me correctly.  Not only did we find homemade whoopee pies on the side of the road… they were pumpkin whoopee pies with a maple cream filling.  Yes, one thousand times.  If you see a stand selling homemade goodies on the side of the road–and these stands are plentiful on the streets of Vermont–stop and search for a whoopee pie.  You will not be disappointed.

Vermont respects well-crafted goods.  We non-Vermonters respect that Vermont represents and produces well-crafted goods.  So if you’re heading up to the Green Mountain State, indulge in their deliciously handmade food products (and make sure to pull over and have at least two maple creemees).
